At the moment I work as a permanent Head of Legal at Mirage Retail Group (MRG), the parent company of the well-known Dutch retail companies Blokker, Intertoys, BCC and MINISO. Here I enjoy dealing with everydal legal and compliance issues from the four subsidiaries, but also with various M&A files, including the purchase of BCC in 2020 and the sale of Big Bazar in 2021. Who knows, I might be available again for challenging interim jobs in the future!
After more than 11 years of permanent employment at Lidl Nederland GmbH, where I held various legal and management positions, I decided to start my own business in 2019. A big step, a new adventure! Meet
Van Berkel Legal & Compliance!
My name is Heleen van Berkel and over the past 15 years I have held various positions at Lidl, at several start-ups and currently at MRG, including Data Protection Officer (DPO), Privacy Officer, Legal Counsel, Legal Advisor, Project Manager, Compliance Officer and General Counsel. As a cooperating foreman I always have been involved in various disciplines, both project-wise an substantively. At both Lidl and MRG I have been involved in setting up and shaping the legal and compliance departments.
I can be widely employed as an interim (project) manager or as a senior legal counsel. For example as all-round legal and compliance manager, but also as a legal counsel, compliance officer, privacy officer and project manager.
My interests and expertise include: managing and setting up (legal and compliance) departments, as well as implementing new themes within an organization such as privacy (including GDPR), data breach procedures, whistleblower / speak up procedures, integrity, ethical business conduct, anti-fraud, anti-corruption, competition law and working with business partners. My expertise can also be used for legal housekeeping, the assessment and drafting of contracts and M&A in Dutch, English
as well as in German.
I am a very pragmatic person and I always try to take a constructive approach towards the business. Analyzing and identifying the business requirements and needs, creating awareness, mapping out data flows, supervising projects as well as conducting risk analyses and DPIAs are what I does best. I also gladly provide in-depth advice on complex legal and privacy-related issues from a business perspective.
